1961 hatte Dahomey einen kurzen Konflikt mit Portugal: Der kleine seit 1680 portugiesische Stützpunkt São João Baptista d’Ajudá bei Ouidah wurde nach einem Ultimatum von den Portugiesen geräumt und am 1. August 1961 von Dahomey übernommen.
